As a Principal Engineer in McAfee's Office of the CTO, Sidharth works at the intersection of security, machine learning, and platform engineering — building systems that classify and analyze threat data at scale while making them easier for teams across the company to use.

"Being a Principal Engineer is about creating clarity, setting technical direction, and enabling teams to make better decisions," Sidharth says.

Getting There Wasn't a Straight Line

Sidharth didn't set out to become a Principal Engineer — the title followed the work. He started in backend analytics and security, then moved into larger-scale ML and classification systems as his responsibilities grew.

"I realized engineering at scale doesn't happen in isolation," he says. "Even small decisions can impact multiple downstream teams." That shift changed how he worked — less about individual execution, more about mentoring and helping set direction for others. "Leadership is built through consistent judgment, communication, and follow-through. Not titles."

Making AI Security Systems More Trustworthy

A lot of Sidharth's focus right now is on making the AI models behind McAfee's security systems more reliable — improving how they're trained, reducing friction in how they're deployed, and watching for the ways automation can quietly go wrong.

One example: feedback loops, where a system can start learning from its own mistakes and slowly degrade in quality if nobody catches it. Keeping that from happening is a big part of building AI that people can actually trust to protect them.

He's also working on making it easier for engineers and researchers to work with these systems in the first place — building tools that let people ask questions in natural language and get answers, rather than manually piecing information together across different systems.

What's Kept Him Growing

Sidharth credits broad experience — backend, cloud, ML, security — with helping him understand not just how systems work, but how they fail. Mentors and tough technical debates helped too. "Communication is a core technical skill," he says. "Curiosity and consistency make the biggest difference over time."

What's kept him at McAfee is the room to actually try things. "There's a strong openness to experimentation when there's clear business value — especially important in fast-moving areas like AI and security."

His Advice for Engineers

"Build real depth, but don't stay narrow. Treat communication as part of the job, not a nice-to-have. And invest in helping others grow — it's one of the most reliable ways to increase your own impact."
